The Cardhu distillery was founded in 1824 by an ex-whisky smuggler John Cumming and his wife Helen. The original distillery was located high on Mannoch hill above the river spey due to the peat softening the water.

In 1885 a new distillery was built, which allowed for an increase in production. (Interestingly, the old stills were sold to William Grant, who setup the Glenfiddich distillery). This increase tripled the output of the distillery, and Johnnie Walker & Sons bought much of it to use in their increasingly popular blend. In 1893 the Cummings family sold the distillery to Johnnie Walker & Sons.

With over 200 years of knowldega and experience, its no surprise that this is an excellent starting point for the aspiring whisky drinker, as Cardhu 12 Year has a delicate and light character.

On the nose thereit has a heady aroma, with hints of pear drops, heather, resin and sweetened nutty honey notes. When a little water is added, whilst the overall aromas mellow it allos maly cereal and moorland hints to come through.

It's enticing and silky smooth in the mouth, with notes of honey, and a delicate fruity character to it. Sweet, and deliicously fresh. The finish lingers with sweet smoke, and a welcoming drying aftertaste.
